Discovering Huanglong: 10 Spectacular Hiking Routes in China's Golden Valley

5. The Mountain Stream Trail

This 6-kilometer path provides a close-up view of the water systems of the valley following the course of the immaculate mountain streams feeding Huanglong's well-known pools. Starting at the upper watershed, the walk winds across steep slopes from which glistening clean springs arise. As the water tumbling down different geological formations creates natural water features along the path, hikers follow its journey. Along with peaceful pools and various wooden bridges spanning over rapids, each providing different angles of view of the water's interaction with the surroundings. Along the path, educational stops clarify the hydrological cycle and its part in creating the travertine terraces under ground. From sheltering grottos where rare moisture-loving plants flourish to exposed rocky areas, the path crosses many micro-climates. Local guides sometimes tell tales about the old beliefs about these holy rivers and their significance for the local ecosystems. Because of sporadic steep stretches and uneven ground, the path calls for modest degrees of fitness.
