Guilty Pleasures We All Have: You're Not Alone

5. Taking A Break From The Computer To Check Your Phone

Have you ever been on the computer looking on Facebook, then stopped to check Facebook on your phone? Perhaps the app will show different items than the webpage. Though the internet is still in your hand, you believe it to be a break from it. You are therefore hardly really moving away unless you completely hide your computer and phone. This habit is evidence of our contemporary obsession with knowledge and continual connection. We have grown so used to the never-ending scroll that even when we try to stop, we often find ourselves grabbing for another gadget to keep up our digital intake. Whatever the platform, it seems as though our brains are programmed to search for that dopamine rush from social media alerts or fresh content. This behavior can be especially sneaky since it creates the impression of a break when in fact we are simply moving our focus from one screen to another. Recognizing this pattern and deliberately trying to distance ourselves from all devices will help us to really unplug and give our minds a rest. Maybe the next time you need a break, consider walking outside, reading a book, or striking a quick chat with a neighbor. Your mind (and eyes) will thank you for the real break from the digital sphere.
