Namibia's 9 Red Desert Natural Wonders: The 4th One is Unique in the World

7. The Brandberg Massif

Rising sharply from the ground of the desert, at 2,573 meters the Brandberg Massif is the tallest mountain in Namibia. Formulated more than 120 million years ago, this ancient granite intrusion has great geological and cultural significance. Meaning "Fire Mountain" in Afrikaans, the mountain's name derives from the vivid orange-red glow produced on its western face by the setting sun. One of the biggest open-air art galleries in the world, the massif features more than 45,000 prehistoric rock drawings including the well-known "White Lady" pictograph. The particular environment around the mountain offers habitat for desert animals and supports endemic plant species.
